Dog Training

Specializing in Field-bred Golden Retrievers.

Our program is our obsession!

We do our utmost to select the best traits in parents to produce ideal Golden Retrievers. We strive for puppies that are healthy, structurally sound, biddable and versatile. Our pups will thrive in homes that enjoy and participate in any of the following activities: Hunting, Hunt Tests, Field Trials, SAR, Performance and outdoor adventure.

Prior to breeding

Here at RRR, we screen and fully health test each dog prior to breeding, in accordance with the Golden Retriever Club of America, Code of Ethics, reducing the likelihood of passing genetic diseases to our puppies.

All health testing completed on our breeding stock can be found on the OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals). That is: hips, elbows, heart and eyes. Eyes are tested updated annually.

Genetic panel results are tested through Pawprint Genetics and posted on each dog’s K9data page.

 Root River Retrievers upholds the responsibilities as a breeder by selecting and breeding stock with the objections of GRCA in mind, that is;

Recognizing that the Golden Retriever breed was developed as a gun dog, to encourage improvement by careful and selective breeding of Golden Retrievers that possess the appearance, structure, soundness, temperament, natural ability, and personality that are characterized in the standard of the breed and do all possible to advance and promote these qualities.

What separates us from other breeders?

Our commitment and dedication to the Golden Retriever is one of the leading factors that sets us apart from most other kennels. Along with that, our primary goal is to breed and raise healthy puppies with correct conformation, sound body, natural retrieving abilities and free from any genetic health issues while giving them the highest quality care and love. We believe in going above and beyond to provide you with the best of the best Golden Retriever.

Genetic Diversity

We strive to keep COI (coefficient of inbreeding) levels as low as possible, while striving to keep with the dogs natural traits and abilities as retriever. Although inbreeding will help cement ‘good’ traits, there is a danger of it cementing bad ones. In particular, it can cause the rapid build-up of disease genes in a population. Even if a breed of dog is lucky enough to be free of serious genetic disorders, inbreeding is likely to affect our dogs in more subtle, but no less serious ways.

Testimonials

We met Lucy with Root River Retrievers back in The fall of 2022 and were able to meet all the puppies she had at that time. She is knowledgeable and willing to answer all questions. We lead a busy outdoor lifestyle and due to that it took us a while to decide on our personal commitment to have a nee member of the family! Lucy was patient, practical, and listened to our needs for not only a pup that was breed to hunt but one with a mild calm temperament. We brought our new pup home several months later and he goes with us everywhere. He is very versatile to our lifestyle and will walk any field, retrieve anything we throw (probably for hours) yet when it is time to meet new people or relax he jumps right into that as well. In the next several months he will be working on his hunting skills and we are hoping to have him with this fall to hunt. Of course we cannot forget to say we still have access to Lucy anytime we need a question answered or a place for training activities and advice ~ cant wait to share his first hunting pictures!
